The UPD Quality Assurance Office (UPD QAO) started conducting pre-travel orientations in 2023 for the quality assurance officers to help them prepare for the trainings that they will undergo through the ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA). The UPD QAO identifies prospective trainees and sends them to the following trainings:
Prior to the pre-travel orientations, the External Quality Assurance Team of the UPD QAO sends registration instructions, training brochures from AUN-QA, and pre-travel notifications containing relevant information for the identified faculty members regarding the processing of travel authority, itinerary of travel and applicable daily subsistence allowance (DSA), preferred flight schedules, travel measures in the country of destination, and necessary documentation.
Dr. Aura C. Matias, Director of the UPD QAO, orients the participants about the objectives of the training that they will participate in, the kinds of workshops that will be conducted, and the expected training outcomes. Basically, the Tier 1 training will introduce the participants to the elements of a quality assurance system and the AUN-QA program assessment model.
UPD QAO Director Aura C. Matias and staff meet with Dr. Marla Mallari (CHK), Asst Prof. Maureen Araneta (CA), and Dr. Maria Faina Diola (NCPAG) prior to the AUN-QA Tier 1 Batch 13
UPD QAO Director Aura C. Matias and the EQA Team met with Dr. Leslie Diaz (COE), Asst. Prof. Cristabel Tiangco (DEPPO), and Dr. Susan Festin (COE) via Zoom prior to the AUN-QA Tier 1 Batch 16
Meanwhile, the Tier 2 training aims to develop the competencies of each participant to conduct program assessment using the AUN-QA model, formulate inquiries grounded on the criteria in the Self-Assessment Report (SAR), facilitate the desktop and site assessment, and produce the quality assessment feedback, presentation, and reply. Tier 2 participants are exposed to an actual program assessment in a higher education institution in any country in Southeast Asia as a case study to help them gain insights on the proper execution of assessments. They are expected to take notes while observing assessors during the site visit. Completion of the Tier 1 training is a prerequisite for participation in Tier 2 trainings.
UPD QAO Director Aura C. Matias orients Tier 1 and Tier 3 training participants: (L-R) Dr. Ian Fontanilla (CS), Dr. Amihan Bonifacio-Ramolete (CAL), Dr. Chen San Pascual (CMC), Asst. Prof. Gladys Nocon (AIT), Asst. Prof. Jon Paul Maligalig (CEd), Dr. Ruth Lusterio-Rico (CSSP), Asst. Prof. Rachel Ramirez (CEd), and Dr. Ton Clemente (CSSP)
UPD QAO Director Aura C. Matias with Tier 2 training participants: (L-R) Assoc. Prof. Yhna Santos (SLIS), Prof. Ivy Suan (VSB), and Dr. Joanne Bantang (CHE) prior to their trip to Vietnam
The Tier 3 training also requires completion of the Tier 1 training. It covers a larger scale of assessment, having the intention to orient participants on institutional quality assurance and help them review the SAR for institutional assessment. The program features workshops on strategic, systemic, and functional quality assurance, and exercises to assess results at an institutional level.
Director Matias also talks about the post-training activities of the participants who will complete the trainings. They can serve as resource persons for echoing sessions, lead or support external quality assurance activities of their units, participate in benchmarking activities, and lead the periodic writing of the SAR.
The External Quality Assurance Team then reminds participants on what to prepare before leaving for the training destination, and briefs them about the documents that must be submitted upon their return.
The pre-travel orientations serve as venues where faculty members who are going as a batch to any of the AUN-QA trainings form bonds and discuss how the training will help them fulfill their responsibilities as administrators and champions of quality assurance in their academic cluster and home units. They also have the opportunity to explore the applications of what they have learned from the training when they teach courses assigned to them, in curriculum development, and external assessment. The UPD QAO will continue to conduct the orientations for all faculty members who will be sent for QA trainings overseas.
