The Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS Biology) and Bachelor of Science in Family Life and Child Development (BS FLCD) programs of UP Diliman successfully underwent the 504th AUN-QA Programme Assessment on July 21-23, 2026, together with the Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and the Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media Arts programs of UP Mindanao. This brings the total of AUN-QA assessed programs in UP Diliman to twelve.

The AUN-QA Assessor Team for the UP Diliman programs was composed of distinguished experts from Malaysia and Thailand. Chief and Lead Assessor Dr. Wan Ahmad Kamil of Universiti Sains Malaysia led the assessment of the BS Biology program, together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Thasaneeya Nopparatjamjomras of Mahidol University. Meanwhile, the BS FLCD program was assessed by Prof. Dr. Irfan Naufal Umar of Universiti Sains Malaysia and Asst. Prof. Thanasin Chutintaranond of Chulalongkorn University.

UP Diliman Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II presented a token of appreciation to the AUN-QA Assessor Team led by Dr. Wan Ahmad Kamil.

The opening session was attended by UP Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs for Quality Assurance Prof. Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs for Faculty Development Prof. Ian Kendrich C. Fontanilla, UP Diliman Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II, College of Science Dean Cynthia P. Saloma, College of Home Economics Dean Joanne R. Bantang, Director of the Institute of Biology Prof. Jonas P. Quilang, and Chairperson of the Department of Family Life and Child Development Assoc. Prof. Charla Rochella S. Saamong. They were joined by the Self Assessment Report (SAR) Teams, members of the College Executive Board, academic staff, and support staff of the two programs.

In his welcome message, Chancellor Vistan proudly presented the two programs, which he described as programs that contribute to both the breadth and depth of UP Diliman’s academic mission. He highlighted how the BS Biology program advances scientific discovery and ecological understanding, while the BS FLCD program strengthens human development and social well-being. More than being distinct in discipline, he noted that both programs embody the University’s core values of excellence, relevance, and service to the people.

Chief Assessor Dr. Wan commended the university for its sustained commitment to academic excellence and continuous quality improvement. He observed that the values underpinning the AUN-QA assessment closely align with those upheld by the University. He also recognized the extensive preparations undertaken by both programs and expressed appreciation for the trust they have placed in the AUN-QA process.

 Dr. Wan Ahmad Kamil, Chief Assessor and Lead Assessor for the BS Biology program, formally opened the 504th AUN-QA Programme Assessment at the University of the Philippines.

During the three-day assessment, the AUN-QA Assessor Team met with the SAR Teams, a number of academic and support staff, students, alumni, and employers of the BS Biology and BS FLCD programs. They also participated in program-level guided tours of laboratories, classrooms, and resource centers that support teaching, learning, research, and student development. 

To provide a broader perspective of the University’s learning environment and student support services, the UP Diliman Quality Assurance Office also organized visits to key university facilities, including the Office of the University Registrar, the Office of Counseling and Guidance, and the UP Diliman Sports Complex.

The AUN-QA Assessor Team toured various program- and university-level facilities as part of the assessment.

The assessment concluded with the presentation of preliminary findings during a hybrid closing session, with UP Mindanao joining the session via Zoom. The participating programs from both constituent universities received the initial observations and recommendations from their respective assessor teams, underscoring the collaborative and constructive nature of the assessment.

Present onsite during the closing session were UP Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs for Quality Assurance Prof. Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay, Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs for Faculty Development Prof. Ian Kendrich C. Fontanilla, UPD Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan II, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Prof. Maria Vanessa P. Lusung-Oyzon, College of Science Dean Cynthia P. Saloma, College of Home Economics Dean Joanne R. Bantang, Director of the Institute of Biology Prof. Jonas P. Quilang, Chairperson of the Department of Family Life and Child Development Assoc. Prof. Charla Rochella R. Saamong. The Dean of the School of Urban and Regional Planning Prof. Dina C. Magnaye also graced the event. Also present were the SAR Teams, members of the College Executive Boards, and the academic and support staff of the BS Biology and BS FLCD programs, along with representatives from UP Diliman programs preparing for future AUN-QA program assessments.

Joining the session via Zoom were UP Mindanao Chancellor Lyre Anni E. Murao, Asst. Prof. Leo Manuel Estaña (Vice Chancellor for Administration), Assoc. Prof. Maria Stella Salazar (Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs), Prof. Karen Joyce G. Cayamanda (University Registrar), the UP Mindanao Quality Assurance Office Director Prof. Ritchie Mae T. Gamot, as well as deans, department chairs, faculty members, staff, and students of the Bachelor of Science in Applied Mathematics and Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Media Arts programs.

UP Mindanao presented certificates of appreciation to the AUN-QA Assessor Team during the closing session.

In her closing message, Assistant Vice President Peleo-Alampay emphasized the significance of this cycle as another successful simultaneous assessment involving two UP constituent universities. She noted that, as the national university, UP is called not only to educate but to lead, generate knowledge, shape public discourse, and serve the Filipino people. She added that strengthening quality assurance enables the University to better fulfill this mandate.

Dr. Wan formally concluded the assessment by expressing his gratitude to the administrations of both UP Diliman and UP Mindanao and for their continued trust in the AUN-QA and their commitment to implementing quality assurance systems across the University of the Philippines System. He emphasized that the assessment is not a one-sided evaluation but a shared journey between the assessor team and the assessed programs, united in the pursuit of continuous quality improvement and academic excellence. Finally, he invited everyone to continue participating in upcoming AUN-QA events, such as the AUN-QA International Conference.

UPD QAO Sharpens PUP’s Readiness for AUN-QA Programme Assessment​
