UPD QAO Organizes Post-Assessment Meeting, Recognizes EQA Proponents

The UP Diliman Quality Assurance Office (UPD QAO) held a post-assessment/accreditation meeting last December 12, 2023 at the UP Asian Institute of Tourism (AIT) Lounge with all the representatives of degree granting units (DGUs) that underwent program assessment and accreditation activities last November and December of 2023 as participants. These include UP Diliman administrators, faculty members, and staff who have worked relentlessly to make the  ASEAN University Network-Quality Assurance (AUN-QA) assessment and the Philippine Technological Council-Accreditation and Certification Board for Engineering and Technology (PTC-ACBET) accreditation visit a huge success.

The Bachelor of Arts (Political Science), Bachelor of Science in Tourism, Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management, and the Master of Science in Food Science programs were assessed by the AUN-QA in November 21-23, 2023. On the other hand, last December 4-7, 2023, five (5) undergraduate programs of the College of Engineering (CoE) were assessed by the PTC-ACBET, specifically the Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Mining Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Metallurgical Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering.

In her welcome message, UPD QAO Director Aura C. Matias congratulated the Deans, department chairpersons, faculty members, and staff for committing to undergo the assessment/accreditation process with the objective of improving the delivery of degree programs and raising further the quality of education that the University of the Philippines provides.  The meeting also served as the venue where Director Matias shared the different QA initiatives and activities that the UPD QAO had accomplished, such as the benchmarking activity with Naresuan University of Thailand, Philippine Quality Award (PQA) coaching session with Pangasinan State University, INSPIRE and ASPIRE sessions for different UPD offices and UP Manila, and the orientation and gap analysis workshop for the PQA, among others. Ten (10) faculty members from each of the academic clusters who participated in the UP System External Reviewers Training were also recognized during the event.

Program representatives shared the spotlight to give their testimonials and messages of encouragement, drawing from their experiences of external quality assurance. AIT Dean Giovanni Legaspi gave a testimonial on the assessment journey of the Institute.  For him, this served as a learning experience and presented an opportunity to improve the undergraduate program they are offering. Dean Shirley Guevarra of the College of Home Economics shared that undergoing AUN-QA assessment had long been in her sights, ever since she served as chairperson of the Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institution Management program, and that vision helped rally the faculty members and staff around the goal of continuous quality improvement.

Assistant Professor John Carlo Garcia, chairperson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (DME), read the testimonial on behalf of Dean Maria Antonia Tanchuling of the College of Engineering (CoE). In her message, Dean Tanchuling expressed gratitude for the assistance that was given by the UPD QAO since the beginning of their preparation for the accreditation. She also thanked the support that was given by the UP System and UP Diliman administration. The faculty members of the College of Science (CS) were also acknowledged by Dean Tanchuling for their cooperation as interviewees for general engineering subjects. CoE Head Librarian Ms. Sharon Esposo Betan was given a special acknowledgement for her contribution to the success of the accreditation visit. Furthermore, Dean Tanchuling manifested that this activity marks the beginning of their journey towards excellence.

For Dr. Bryan G. Alamani, quality assurance officer of the Department of Chemical Engineering (DChE), renewing the accreditation of the BS Chemical Engineering program is a priority activity for the department to continuously improve the quality of the chemical engineering program and its students.

On behalf of UP Diliman Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Jerwin F. Agpaoa applauded the faculty and staff who were involved in the preparation of the Self-Assessment and Self Study Reports. He expressed hope that the QA experience of the nine (9) programs will serve as an inspiration to other programs in the university to commit to external assessment, following the mandate of the UP administration for all programs to be externally assessed.

The final assessment report from AUN-QA is expected to be released in February 2024, while the accreditation report from the PTC-ACBET will be released around the last two quarters of the year. Nine programs are gearing up for assessment and accreditation in 2025-2026. The Bachelor of Elementary Education, Bachelor of Secondary Education, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science, and Bachelor of Library and Information Science programs will be assessed by AUN-QA in 2025, while the Bachelor of Science in Biology and Bachelor of Music programs will be assessed in 2026. The Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering are expected to undergo PTC-ACBET accreditation in 2025.
