The UP Diliman Quality Assurance Office (UPD QAO) held a week-long celebration last April 29 to May 3, 2024 to mark its fourth year anniversary. The QA Week formally opened with a ceremony at the Malcolm Hall Auditorium that was attended by Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Alyssa M. Peleo-Alampay, UP Diliman Chancellor Edgardo Carlo L. Vistan III, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Maria Vanessa Lusung-Oyzon, Vice Chancellor for Administration Prof. Adeline A. Pacia, deans, directors, QA Officers, and faculty members from the different academic units.
This year’s celebration is anchored on two symbolisms: gears in synchronized motion in an efficient operating system. In his opening remarks, Chancellor Vistan reiterated his agenda of “fixing our house” via the QA-based reform of systems and processes and called on the whole University to devote their energies and resources to develop and sustain the culture of quality.
Afterwards, UPD QAO Director Aura C. Matias gave an overview of the activities for this year’s celebration, which included the conduct of the QA Clinic, a QA orientation for administrative staff and REPS, and a recognition ceremony honoring different stakeholders of the University. She further explained that the move in schedule of the anniversary was planned to coincide with the commemoration of the institutionalization of Quality Policy of the University of the Philippines.
Meanwhile, AVP Peleo-Alampay shared the direction of the UP System towards quality assurance under the administration of President Angelo Jimenez. One of the projects she shared is the newly created QA Portal, formerly known as the iAADS+ Portal. The QA Portal will eventually be the guiding instrument for both internal and external quality assurance activities of the degree-granting units. AVP Peleo-Alampay also emphasized in her message that quality assurance in UP does not mean adherence or compliance to one set of standards but aims to harmonize different processes and provide opportunities for the creation and development of plans to improve the delivery of services.
In her presentation, UP Diliman Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Lusung-Oyzon showed the agenda and institutional support of her office when it comes to QA, which includes the provision of various learning opportunities for students to develop lifelong learning, public service orientation, and socio-civic responsibility consistent with the core UP values and the engagement in internationalization goals of the University. She said that her office is committed to working with the QAO by ensuring the highest quality of learning, teaching, curricula and program offerings, research, and academic operations and standards of the university.
The QA Clinic was held on the second day of the QA Week to check on the progress of the College and Department Quality Assurance (QA) officers on the QA activities of their respective units using the life cycle approach developed by QAO. This initiative implemented a grounded approach to solicit the needs of QA officers and the state of the degree programs of their respective units in terms of accomplishing particular QA initiatives.
